Georgia’s Mini Grand Canyon

There’s a mini canyon in Georgia and it’s gorgeous.

As I took my first glance of the canyon is was quite breathtaking. On the very first parking stop, after crossing a small grassy area, the view opens up to the canyon below you.

It was a bit unexpected to see such a grand canyon in the middle of Georgia. The canyon, located in Lumpkin, Georgia is just about a two and a half hour drive away from Atlanta.

The canyon came about from poor farming practices which started washing out the soil, but it makes for some beautiful views today.

After we soaked in the views from the top, we drove to the end of the road from where you can hike down to the bottom of the canyon. The hike down isn’t too long. It takes about 10-20 minutes depending on how fast you go. The path keeps going down until you finally reach the canyon floor. Once you reach the bottom, there are several different paths to see about six different canyons.

The floor of the canyon is very wet and muddy most times of the year. So if you’re ever planning to visit, make sure you wear either sandals or good hiking shoes. The kind that won’t get wet too easily and those that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty.

The views from the bottom are just as grand.

It is possible to see the whole canyon in just a few hours and be on your way, or you can opt to spend the whole day. There are more hikes you can do around the canyon that are longer, to spend the rest of the day.

After visiting the first time, I kept wanting to go back again. It is definitely a unique place to explore if you’re ever driving by.
